Why AV Belongs in the Design Set, Not the Punch List

By the time a hospitality operator asks for video walls at the bar, zoned audio in the dining room, and a single touch panel to run it all, the electrical and low-voltage rough-in is usually already locked. Retrofitting conduit, running new cable through finished walls, or carving out rack space after drywall is up costs far more than planning for it during design development. What to Rough In Before Drywall

Matching the System to the Space

The right AV design depends heavily on the venue type, and it's worth flagging for design teams early:

  • Small, full-service restaurants generally need simple HDMI matrix switching for a handful of displays and a single compact multi-zone amplifier — modest rack space, minimal rough-in.

  • Bar and grill concepts need genuinely separate audio and video zones so a sports broadcast at the bar doesn't bleed into a quieter dining room, which means additional amplifier zones and speaker home runs.

  • Hotel lobbies often combine ambient lobby displays, an adjoining bar that switches between programming and hotel messaging, and divisible meeting rooms that can operate independently or share content — each of which needs its own control and cabling path.

  • Casino floors and large event spaces scale into AV-over-IP distribution across hundreds of displays on multiple floors, which means fiber backbone between IDF closets, not just copper.

  • Sports bars with video walls need structural and electrical coordination well beyond a typical TV mount — video wall processors, mounting structure, and dedicated circuits belong on the architectural and structural drawings, not just the AV plan.



One Touch Panel, Fewer Callbacks

From an operator's standpoint, the payoff for getting the infrastructure right is a single touch panel or app that runs every display, zone, and audio source in the building. From a construction standpoint, that centralized control system still needs a home — a rack location, a network drop, and often a wall box near the host stand or behind the bar. Flagging that location early avoids the "where do we put this" conversation during final walkthrough.
