Designing hospitality spaces where the technology disappears

A practical look at how A/V distribution and control shape restaurants, bars, hotels, and casinos — and what interior designers, architects, and general contractors need to coordinate before the walls close.

Guests form their impressions of a room within seconds. Factors like light levels, sound levels, sightlines, and — increasingly — the content displayed on screens play a crucial role. Digital signage, video walls, and interactive displays capture attention and encourage guests to linger longer. However, these elements must be integrated into the space rather than simply mounted on walls after construction.


This is primarily a design challenge, not just a technology issue. The placement of displays influences furniture arrangements and sightlines. Similarly, amplifier zones should align with lighting zones. Signal distance dictates conduit routing. The good news is that the platform choices available today provide design teams with greater flexibility.


What Each Discipline Owns


  • Interior Designers: Screens are now considered finishes. Bezel color, mounting depth, and off-state appearance should be included in the FF&E package.

  • Architects: One rack room and one network are essential. Plan the location, ventilation, and pathways early; everything else will rely on patch cables.

  • General Contractors: Cable pulls must happen before drywall installation. Blocking, box heights, and power sources at each display are critical punch-list items that can cause issues later.

Digital menu boards and a few casual-viewing TVs are powered by a compact HDMI matrix and a small multi-zone amplifier. An RTI touch panel provides staff with a single interface for sources, volume, and display settings — no more laminated instruction sheets taped to the POS.

02 — Bar and Grill: Two Atmospheres Under One Roof

The bar wants the game loud, while the dining room seeks a quieter atmosphere. HDBaseT-enabled matrix switching and extenders carry signals throughout the building. Separate audio zones allow sports to play at the bar while music fills the dining room — no acoustic compromise.


  • Different events can be displayed on different screens, with audio localized per zone.

  • Staff can control everything from an iPad running the RTI app.

  • Zones can be adjusted as service periods change.


03 — Hotel Lobby: One Property, Many Moods, One Control Layer

Ambient content fills the lobby. A bar transitions between game broadcasts and property messaging throughout the day. Divisible meeting rooms can share content or operate independently. Either HDMI matrix switching or AV-over-IP manages distribution, while the RTiPanel app provides the front desk with a single management interface.


  • Lobby art-mode content complements the interior palette.

  • Meeting-room configurations adapt to operable partitions.

  • Back-of-house paging and music utilize the same amplifiers.

04 — Casino: Hundreds of Displays, Each One Independent

At this scale, AV-over-IP replaces point-to-point cabling. MXnet encoders and decoders operate over the network, with fiber links between switches extending the system across floors and buildings. Each display can show live TV, promotional content, or wayfinding signage on its own schedule.


  • Independent control is available for each display across the property.

  • Fiber connections between IDFs eliminate distance limits.

  • Audio can be synchronized or diversified floor by floor.


05 — Sports Bar: Every Seat is the Best Seat

2x2 and 3x3 video walls anchor the room, with satellite displays filling in sightlines that the walls miss. Video wall processing is integrated into the MXnet system, audio zones are tailored for each area, and an RTI control processor automates the entire venue — game day presets included.

  • One-touch switching between game audio, music, and announcements is available.

  • Presets ensure that a new bartender cannot disrupt the system.

Coordination Checklist Before Drywall


  • Rack Location: Central, ventilated, lockable, and accessible from the network closet. Matrix, amplifiers, and control processors should be housed together.

  • Distance: HDBaseT extends 70m at 1080p, 100m with 4:4:4, and up to 150m with a long-distance kit. Beyond that, plan for fiber.

  • Display Backing: Ensure blocking, recessed power, and a low-voltage box behind every screen, including those added during value engineering.

  • Audio Zones: Draw them on the RCP alongside lighting zones. Speaker layout and amp channel count should follow this drawing.

  • Network: AV-over-IP requires its own PoE switch (12, 24, or 48 ports depending on zone count), separate from the guest Wi-Fi VLAN.

  • Control Points: Decide early whether to use an in-wall touch panel, countertop panel, or tablet app. This choice affects the box, height, and finish.


Control That Fits the Operator, Not the Other Way Around


Any of these systems can be operated by a third-party control system, through drivers, or directly via an API.
