Designing hospitality spaces where the technology disappears

A practical look at how A/V distribution and control shape restaurants, bars, hotels and casinos — and what interior designers, architects and general contractors need to coordinate before the walls close.

Guests decide how they feel about a room in the first few seconds. Light level, sound level, sightlines, and — increasingly — what is on the screens. Digital signage, video walls and interactive displays hold attention and keep people in the venue longer, but only when they are designed into the space rather than surface-mounted onto it after the fact.

That is a design problem before it is a technology problem. Display locations affect furniture plans and sightlines. Amplifier zones follow the same logic as your lighting zones. Signal distance drives conduit routing. The good news: the platform choices below give the design team more freedom, not less.

What each discipline owns

  • Interior designers — Screens become finishes. Bezel color, mounting depth, and off-state appearance belong in the FF&E package.

  • Architects — One rack room, one network. Plan its location, ventilation and pathways early; everything else is patch cable.

  • General contractors — Cable pulls precede drywall. Blocking, box heights and power at each display are the punch-list items that hurt later.

Five venues, five levels of ambition

01 — Small casual restaurant: simplicity, where every square foot counts

Digital menu boards and a handful of casual-viewing TVs, fed by a compact HDMI matrix and a small multi-zone amplifier. An RTI touch panel gives staff one interface for sources, volume and display settings — no laminated instruction sheet taped to the POS.

02 — Bar and grill: two atmospheres under one roof

The bar wants the game loud. The dining room wants a conversation. HDBaseT-enabled matrix switching and extenders carry signal the length of the building, while separate audio zones let sports play at the bar and music play in the dining room — no acoustic compromise between them.

03 — Hotel lobby: one property, many moods, one control layer

Ambient content in the lobby. A bar that swings between the game and property messaging as the day turns over. Divisible meeting rooms that share content or run independently. Either HDMI matrix switching or AV-over-IP handles the distribution; the RTiPanel app gives the front desk a single place to manage all of it.

04 — Casino: hundreds of displays, each one independent

At this scale AV-over-IP replaces point-to-point cabling: MXnet encoders and decoders ride the network, and fiber links between switches extend the system across floors and buildings. Every display can show live TV, promotional content or wayfinding signage on its own schedule.

05 — Sports bar: every seat is the best seat

2x2 and 3x3 video walls anchor the room, with satellite displays filling the sightlines the walls miss. Video wall processing lives inside the MXnet system, audio zones are tuned per area, and an RTI control processor automates the whole venue — game day presets included.

The same platform that runs a boutique lobby scales — over fiber — to hundreds of independently controlled displays across a resort. The design intent does not have to shrink to fit the budget tier.

Coordination checklist before drywall

  • Rack location — Central, ventilated, lockable, and reachable from the network closet. Matrix, amplifiers and control processor live together.

  • Distance — HDBaseT extends 70m at 1080p, 100m with 4:4:4, and up to 150m with a long-distance kit. Beyond that, plan fiber.

  • Display backing — Blocking, recessed power and a low-voltage box behind every screen, including the ones added in value engineering.

  • Audio zones — Draw them on the RCP alongside lighting zones. Speaker layout and amp channel count follow that drawing.

  • Network — AV-over-IP wants its own PoE switch (12, 24 or 48 port depending on zone count), not the guest Wi-Fi VLAN.

  • Control points — Decide early: in-wall touch panel, countertop panel, or tablet app. It changes the box, the height and the finish.

Control that fits the operator, not the other way round

Any of these systems can be driven by a third-party control system, by drivers, or directly through an API.
